How to play Old Maid

A simple first round, with the chosen deck clearly named.

Choose one setup

This guide begins with the standard playing-card version. Remove one queen from an ordinary 52-card deck and use the remaining 51 cards. Our original printable is a different mini deck: six picture pairs plus one odd Sun. Do not mix the two decks.

Deal and clear the first pairs

Deal all the cards around the group. Some players may receive one more card. Everyone checks their own hand and removes pairs. In the standard format, two equal ranks make a pair regardless of suit. Three equal ranks leave one card after a pair is removed; four can make two pairs.

Offer, draw, check

The dealer offers a spread, face-down hand to the player on the left. That player draws one card without seeing its face first, then checks whether it completes a pair. Any new pair leaves the hand. The drawing player next offers their own hand to the next active player on the left.

Continue among active hands

A player with no cards stops taking turns. Continue around the players who still hold cards. When every possible pair has been removed, one unmatched queen remains; its holder is the final holder in this version. Keep the outcome friendly rather than teasing a player.

Use the picture mini deck

Our custom printable applies the same draw-and-pair idea to labelled pictures. Two Cat cards match; Sun has no copy. With all six pairs removed, Sun remains. This mini deck is an original teaching adaptation, not a reproduction of a commercial Old Maid pack.

Practise one part first

Use face-up pairing practice for the matching step. Use the turn demonstration to inspect the offer order and empty-hand skips. Both show cards openly for teaching and are explicitly different from a real hidden draw.

Check the whole reference

The named source gives its full procedure, including how it treats mistakes. Before a physical round, agree the version, direction and matching rule, and check that the deck is complete. A family can pause to correct a teaching error without turning the explanation into a contest.
